What should I do if I get into a car accident?
If you are like thousands of Californians, one of the first things you do in the morning is step out of your house and into your car. However, no matter how careful of a driver you may be, it is highly likely that at some point you are going to end up in an automobile accident. Frankly, given the statistics, it is more of a case of when, rather than if, this will occur. With this in mind, it is important to know what to do in the aftermath of a car accident. According to US News, taking a step-by-step approach to this situation yields the best results.
The very first thing you will want to do is assess yourself and your passengers for any injuries. If there are any, make sure to call 911 right away. Once you have determined that there are no injuries (or have taken action if there are), you want to look around at your immediate surroundings and determine if where you have stopped your car is a safe place to be. If necessary, you need to move the car out of immediate danger if at all possible. If it is not possible to move the car, make sure that you and all of your passengers are away from the car and out of traffic.
You should also call the police. Even if the accident is minor in scope, you want to make sure that everything is fully documented by a neutral third-party. When speaking with the police, try to give a neutral account of what occurred, leaving your own opinions out of it.
